HAPPY BIRTHDAY…..

Monday, July 31st, 2006

…..to my momma.

I miss you so much.  I wish I could call you and wish you a happy birthday today, but having to just say it out loud will have to do.

I love you.

FINISHED ON FRIDAY…another woven bag

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Mood: sleepy

ws_beardaysfriday.gif

This one is for my friend Judi.  I met her through the Master Spinner’s program and she sort of adopted me.  She loved the last two bags that I wove so I decided to make her one as well.  This one uses a red wool warp and a sparkly multi colored weft.  Here’s the specs on this bag.

7 1/2 inches wide, 10 inches long, 2 inches deep.  Magnetic closure with a crocheted button cover on each side of the bag at the clasp area.  Woven in the rigid heddle loom using a Bronson Lace pattern.  I do have one more bag using the same yarns but sewed it together differently and it gives a whole different look.  Need to pick up more handles today and will post that picture over the weekend.

Til the next time, stay cool and weave on.

KIDS THESE DAYS…wait he’s mine

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Mood: insane

ws_beardaysThursday.gif

Yesterday the kids toilet broke…it won’t fill back up.  They have to use my bathroom until theirs is fixed.  Two oldest children have recently started shaving, son his “peach fuzz” and daughter her legs.  Middle son is jealous.  Can you see where this heading?  Anyway, fast forward to last night.  We got home from church and were getting the kids ready for bed when Jim noticed something very strange with middle jealous child.  Called him into the other room, broke out in hysterical laughter and called me into the room.  Asked me to look at son’s face and see if I can spot it.  Took about 2 seconds to see it.  Said son attempted to shave his eyebrows off.  Now he did a fairly good job of it, but left some ovbious signs. When confronted with it, said son denied anything was wrong and he did nothing.  Had child feel stubble on his face, said he felt nothing.  Took child into the bathroom to show him, still denied anything had happened.  Showed child the TAN lines that were created, still nothing.  Jim tells him that he found blonde hair in his razor…Jim is NOT blonde and neither am I (not that I use his razor).  Son still completely denied anything and said he did nothing wrong, didn’t use the razor but admits that perhaps his eyebrows just fell out.  It’s so funny Jim and I could barely contain our laughter.  Said son was sent to bed and hubby and I consider brushing dog and taping dog hair to child’s face to make him perhaps believe his eyebrows grew back overnight.  We rule this out as cruel and unusual punishment (for the dog…just kidding).  Child woke this morning still trying to tell me that he did nothing wrong.  Child found out that for his lies he is being grounded but for the shaving of his eyebrows there will be no grounding.  Child admits he lied thinking he will not be grounded.  Child is wrong and he is grounded.

Other then that, I still have a broken toilet and have added 3 additional children to our house today so there are 8 kids in the house ranging in age from 2 to 12 and amazingly enough I am still somewhat sane.

No knitting being worked on today but hopefully later on I can get something done.

Til next time….knit on.

I know it’s been a few days since I blogged on here.  Sorry about that.  Just been busy doing all kinds of things to start getting ready for the hubster’s deployment.  We received word yesterday that where we were originally told he was going was the wrong place and he’d be going someplace “a little”  (to me a lot) more dangerous.  So…we continue to pray that the command decides not to send him since another unit is deploying in January.  So we will see.

I finished test knitting a sock and love it.  It’s going to be a ‘leisure’ sock pattern for the Socks For Soldiers group.  The colorway is my Blue Acres (link on left side bar to my yarn shop)

These are a really easy knit and were fun to make.  Check out the group and get some great patterns and do some sock knitting for our soldiers.  I know they appreciate it.

Guess that’s all the news that’s fit to report for now.

Knit Sock Kit Swap … the finished bag

Here is the bag…completed with all it’s glory.  Just gotta throw gently and lovingly place a few more goodies in the bag and it’s good to go.  Tried my hardest to get a picture that would show off the colors as true, but couldn’t quite get the color depth.  But here it is…

I hope my swap partner likes and enjoys.

Now I must go think what my next project will be.  I enjoyed making the tote bag…should their be more in my future?

ob_crafty.gif WEAVING PROJECT

Am slowly working on my KSKS project.  I just took this weaving off the loom.

I will actually break out the sewing machine now and stitch it up into a bag.  Hope to have it done by the weekend.  Stay tuned.

Thanks all for the comments here and privately.  I know we will be ok with this deployment.  It’s not me I will worry about, it’s the hubster.  I hate the thought of him being in a combat zone.  We still have a few months to go so we will do all the necessary prep work and get things ready and spend as much time together as possible.  I am sure I will be whining when the time comes, though, so bear with me on that. :)

Weather

It’s still crazy hot here (like most of the country I think) and yesterday our outside thermometer measured at 116!  Now that was stinking blinking hot.  Tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day of this wave.  Oh joy.  Was going to take the kids to the lake but I don’t know now….we’ll see how it goes.  We are expecting a “cool” front on Saturday and our temps are predicted to be a mere 92.

Whatever you all are doing today I hope you stay cool and safe.  Drink lots and lots of water.

SAD TODAY

Don’t have an exact date as of yet, but it looks like the hubster is rolling out of here mid October and going someplace “else” for a year.  Not looking forward to it, but that’s the Army life we lead I guess.

Haven’t told the kids yet.  Will tell them soon so we can start getting them prepared.  They’ve known it would be a possibility all along and have several friends who have deployed family members, but the longest we’ve been apart since they came to live with us is 3 months at a time….so this one will be hard.  But, we’ll get through it.

WEAVING PHOTOS

Ok…here are some finished project photos.

This is the scarf that Chris made earlier this month.  We finally got around to taking a picture of it.  He picked the yarn out of his own stash and decided how he wanted it to look.  He and I are both very proud of this project.

This wrap was made with my own hand painted sock yarns.  The solids are a green and a blue and the variegated is my Blue Acres (link on left if interested in looking at the yarns for sale)

This one is made with a solid navy blue and a variegated blue/green/gold cotton.  I really enjoyed working with the cotton and it will make a nice light weight wrap.  Will most certainly make more using the cotton.  Unfortunately the colors didn’t come through on the camera as well as I would have liked them too.  But hopefully you get the idea.  I’ll ty to get a better picture later.

Both of these wraps should be making their way to Ohio by the end of the week.

Lack of posting content

Just wanted to say I am still here.  Leave is over, hubster went back to work yesterday, and we are trying to get back into our “normal” routine.  Have pictures to share but they are on the other computer and need to be cropped and/or resized and I haven’t loaded my software on that computer yet.  So bear wtih me.

Still no real news on the deployment front.  Still waiting for word if it’s a go or a no.

Heat has been just awful lately.  I know it’s not just here but all over.  Temps soared above 110 over the weekend and temps IN the house hovered between 80-90 as well and the AC rarely shut off.  I do NOT want this coming electric bill.  Thankfully we only have two more months on the lease here at the house commonly referred to as the “pit”.  If we could get a confirmation on the deployment then we will know which direction to take on house hunting.

Not much to report on the knitting front right now.  I am working on some CIC socks when I can stand to work with the worste weight wool.  Mainly I have been weaving.  Finished one prayer shawl over the weekend and started on another.  That one hopefully should be done by tomorrow. I am working with cotton and I love it.  The next one will be cotton as well.

That’s all for now, I guess.  We have a play date this morning then it’s off to run a few errands and then back home to sit in front of a fan :)

Homemade Ice Cream In A Can

We haven’t tried this yet, but I plan to do it next week with my kids.  Let me know if you do this, how it turns out and I will report the same

What You Need

For the freezer you need:

    • 1 lb. empty can with plastic lid
    • 3 lb. Empty can with plastic lid
    • 1 1/2 cups of rock or kosher salt
    • 20 cups (about 7 1/2 lbs.) of crushed ice

For the ice cream you need:

    • 1 cup heavy cream
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1 tsp. vanilla
    • 1/3 cup of chocolate chips

How To Make It

In the small can mix cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, and chocolate chips.
Cover the small can and set in the center of the larger can.
Layer half the crushed ice alternately with half the salt in the empty space between the cans.
Cover the larger can.
Choose a hard level surface like a cement walk way and roll the can back and forth for about 10 minutes.
Open outer can; empty old ice and water, lift out small can; wipe lid dry and remove. With a rubber spatula scrape ice cream from can sides. Stir and cover.
Return small can. Repack with remaining ice and salt. Cover and roll for 5 more minutes.
