Clothing Choices

In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.  2 Titus 2:9

Let you manner of dress be pleasing unto the Lord.

My husband and I are trying to teach our children to be modest in their dressing.  It’s hard!  Our society is bombarded with immodest dressing.  Models dressed in next to nothing sell calendars, cars, beer, face cream, clothes, make-up, and just about everything else.

Let’s face it, sex sells.  That’s the motto of every advertising agency in America today.  But it’s also tearing down our society, our morals, our families, and our marriages.  It’s a stumbling block for men and women in their Christian walk.

Have you walked through the children’s clothing section lately?  Do you know how hard it is to find a pair of jeans for a 10 year old girl that doesn’t go below her hips or show her belly button?  Oh, and what about the pants with an 'invitation' written across the bottom?  Let’s not even mention the tops, shorts, and other accessories out there.

We as Christians need to return to a more moderate way of dressing.

In Church on Sunday, I saw women in low cut sweaters and mini skirts.  That couldn’t have been pleasing to God.  While I don’t know the heart of these women nor do I know where they are in their walk with the Lord, I do know that God has called me to step up and be an example.

So, it’s time to go through my closet yet again.  I need to look at each piece of clothing and ask the following questions.  Is this pleasing to the Lord?  Will this set a good example to my children and their friends as modest dress?  Will this cause another to stumble in their walk?

Won’t you join me in trying to regain modest dress?  Let’s start setting the example for those who need to see the “right” thing.
